Pilkentafel

"I leaf for the Pilkentafel", sailor often said, when they made their way to a pub on the eastern side of the firth. There they drank tea punch and beer, were telling fabulous stories and enjoying a game, which gave the house its name: Like billiards, small pins where bowled over by small balls (Pilke = small ball, Tafel = table / board). This game was brought along by sailor from Hamburg or Holland and made the pub "Pilkentafel" popular. The pub already existed since 1612. From western shore the shortest way was right over the firth from the gate named "Kompagnietor", as the garden of the pup "Pilkentafel" was ranging right up to the water. This secured the cost of living for two ferryman. Skipper Niels Ellefsen 1771 tore down the old building and built it up again in its actual shape. He named the building "Ellefsburg" (Ellefs Castle). On a board still you can read:

ELLEFSBURG bin ich genannt. (Ellefs Castle I am named)
Gott hält über mich (Good is keeping over me)
Sein Gnaden Hand. (His gracious hand)
Gebe unsern Gott die Ehre. 1771 Give honor to our good. 1771)

The memory for the old pub is kept by the name of the street - and by the name of a theatre workshop, showing contemporary theatre inside this old walls.
